FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What does acupuncture feel like?

Most people are surprised by how gentle acupuncture feels. The needles are very fine, and you may notice a slight sensation as they’re placed, followed by feelings of warmth, heaviness, tingling, or simply relaxation. Many patients find the experience calming and restful.

What can I expect at my first appointment?

Your first visit is all about getting to know you. We’ll talk through your health history, what brings you in, and what you’d like to work on. You’ll have plenty of time to ask questions before we begin your personalized acupuncture treatment.

What should I wear?

Come comfortable! Loose-fitting clothing that can easily be adjusted above the elbows and knees works best. If we need to access another area for treatment, we’ll make sure you feel comfortable and properly covered throughout your visit.

Should I eat before my appointment?

We recommend having a meal or light snack within a few hours of your appointment and staying hydrated. There’s no need to do anything special to prepare.

How long is an appointment?

Your first appointment allows extra time for us to talk through your health history, concerns, and goals before your treatment. Follow-up visits include a check-in on how you’ve been feeling followed by your personalized treatment.

How often should I come in?

Everyone is different. How often you come in will depend on what brings you to acupuncture, your goals, and how you respond to treatment.

When treating your Five Element Causative Factor, we generally recommend coming in weekly for the first 12 sessions. From there, many people gradually move to treatments every other week, then monthly, and eventually seasonally. Some people choose to continue coming in weekly because they find that regular treatment supports their overall health and well-being.

Your treatment schedule will always be individualized based on your needs and how you are responding.

Are acupuncture needles sterile?

Yes. We use sterile, single-use acupuncture needles that are safely disposed of after every treatment.

Is the office accessible? What if I have difficulty using stairs?

Our treatment space is located upstairs and does require the use of stairs. We want acupuncture care to be as accessible and comfortable as possible, so if stairs are difficult or not accessible for you, please reach out before booking. At-home acupuncture appointments are available to accommodate patients who are unable to access the office. We’re happy to discuss your needs and find an option that works for you.

What is Five Element Acupuncture?

Five Element Acupuncture is a whole-person approach based on the traditional elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. It considers different aspects of how you’re feeling and looks for patterns that can help guide a treatment personalized to you.

What are moxa and cupping?

Moxa uses gentle warmth as part of a traditional acupuncture treatment, while cupping uses light suction on the skin. Either may be incorporated into your session when appropriate. We’ll always talk you through anything we recommend beforehand so you know exactly what to expect.

How might I feel after acupuncture?

Many people leave feeling relaxed and refreshed. Everyone responds differently, though, so we’ll let you know if there’s anything specific to keep in mind after your treatment.

Do you accept insurance?

We’re not accepting insurance at this time, but we hope to explore insurance options in the future. Any changes will be shared here as they become available.

I’ve never had acupuncture before. Is that okay?

Absolutely. Many of our patients are new to acupuncture. We’ll take our time, explain what to expect, answer your questions, and make sure you feel comfortable throughout your visit. There’s no need to know anything about acupuncture before you arrive.
